Must Know Mondays

Another Monday, another day of catching up after a great weekend. Here are a just a few things that caught my eye . . .

Paris-is-always-a-good-idea

If you’re a feminist, no matter what your political leanings . . . check out this piece written by President Barack Obama on “This is What a Feminist Looks Like.” This is the ultimate example of how you do not have to be a woman to be a feminist. Also, what he says about, “changing the attitude that raises our girls to be demure and our boys to be assertive,” relates well to the UN’s groundbreaking HeForShe campaign.

If you’re a fitness fanatic  . . . The New York Times has some solid tips on how to avoid gaining weight while traveling. I know I’ll be bringing my Fitbit to Paris and Amsterdam and walking everywhere over the next two weeks. And though I’ve already vowed to indulge in the local delicacies, I’ll be doing so in moderate doses.

If you’re in need of a little inspiration this Monday . . . just last summer, Yusra Mardini, a Syrian refugee, was swimming for her life after the motor of the boat carrying her and her sister to freedom, gave out. This summer? She’s swimming for the gold at the 2016 Olympics as a member of the first ever Olympics refugee team. Stories like hers make me reevaluate my priorities in life.

If you’re a ballet geek . . . as a former dancer and ballerina wannabe, I am obsessed with Misty Copeland. Not only is she the first African American principal dancer for the American Ballet Theatre, girl has hips! Translation: she’s not only breaking the race barrier, but she also an amazing role model for young women who are not built like twigs. I wish she had been in the spotlight when I was growing into my body because I think I would have realized a lot earlier that it’s better to be strong than skinny. She spoke with The Cut about nutrition, social media and how she stays centered despite her celebrity status and hectic schedule.

If you have a case of wanderlust . . . scroll through these gorgeous pictures of Rio de Janeiro while you’re watching The Olympics. Then imagine yourself on a beach, sipping a Piña Colada and getting your tan on.

Final thoughts:

Monday Mantra: “Paris is Always A Good Idea!” – Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina

Song of the Week: “Michelle” by The Beatles

What I’m Reading: Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Ann Fowler

What I’m Craving: Croissants, baguettes, cheese, macarons, champagne . . . anything French since that’s where I will be tomorrow!
