“You’re never alone when you’re reading a book …”

I don’t know what it’s like where you are but in New England it has been cold, rainy and generally disgusting for the past few days, including Memorial Day. And that is never a great way to start the summer.

So instead of taking lots of fun day trips and eating al fresco at our favorite little places, we’ve been doing a lot of work inside the house as well as binge-watching everything on the DVR or Netflix and reading lots of books. And not e-books … book books. Real, tangible – feel the satisfaction of the paper between your fingers as you turn the page and smell that wonderful scent of paper and typeprint – books.

books with windowAnd in the past few months I’ve noticed a similar theme in the books I’ve chosen: women, married to famous men who cheat and treat them badly. In most of these stories the woman comes out of the situation better in the end, but not always.

This streak started with Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald, which focuses on the life of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife, an author and artist in her own right but remembered mostly for her famous other half and then a mental illness that most health professionals now believe was a misdiagnosis. Then it was The Paris Wife, which gives a heartbreaking look at the life of Ernest Hemingway’s first wife.  And then I read The Light of Paris, and although the heroine is not married to a famous man and he doesn’t cheat, he is rich and he is horrible to her.

Then just Monday I started The Aviator’s Wife. As a pilot-in-training, reading about Anne Lindbergh falling in love with flying is so relatable. Her ability to tolerate her husband’s cold nature and cheating ways – I am so not getting that.

All of the above books I would highly recommend – even being only 100 pages into The Aviator’s Wife – so if you’re looking for some great historical fiction with lots of scenes of 1920s Paris, you need to add these to your library. But now I’m looking to change things up.

And since we’re looking at another week of rain and cooler temps, I am in need of more reading material. So I am turning to the universe – any suggestions on my next book?
