A few weeks ago dozens of Tall Ships from across the globe sailed into Boston and Charlestown harbor. The Sail Boston event drew hundreds of thousands into the city to climb aboard these magnificent vessels and meet the crews that man them.
Of course I had to check it out. It was a lovely walk along the waterfront and I really enjoyed the beautiful ships with their sails soaring high above our heads.
The last time Sail Boston welcomed this many ships was in 2000. I was a little one so all I remember is being in awe of how large these ships actually were and wondering how they were able to successfully float.
A smaller event happened in 2009 and I got to attend that with my then boyfriend, now husband. Nine years later and I was still amazed at the craftsmanship and skill that it takes to sail these great vessels. Another eight years have passed and I feel the same way.
This time we went aboard The Esmeralda, a training ship for the Chilean army, and wandered its decks. I even got a chance to ring the bell!
It was great to sit on the deck of the Whiskey Priest Pub and have a drink while watching the cruises full of tourists sail by. In a way, it was really Boston’s first taste of summer and got us all ready for July 4th.
Anyone else get to this year’s Sail Boston? What was your favorite memory?
